Oleg Popov died quietly Thursday in Rostov-on-Don to the age of 86. Four days before had offered to the inhabitants of that Russian city last function. It was the clown’s most renowned circus of this nation in the second half of the TWENTIETH century and a global icon of the specialty.

The fame of Popov began to grow during the era of soviet power in the famous Circus of Moscow on the boulevard Tsvetnói. In 1954 he combined for the first time an act of juggling and acrobatics with the characteristic humor of the folk tales of his land and created a personal style, in which many also emphasized the legacy of his teacher Karandash and some influence of charlie chaplin in Chaplin, visible in the traits melancholy of the character.

in 1956, became known internationally when he undertook the first tour of the countries of western Europe.

it Was then that Popov became one of the faces emblematic of the State Circus of the soviets.

Australia proclaimed in 1971 as the king of the slopes and ten years after the International Circus Festival of Monte carlo was rewarded with the title of Clown of Gold.

cubans have discovered Popov in 1962, when presented in Havana with the Circus Soviet in the Sports City.
His philosophy was summed up in a sentence. “I do not intend to provoke laughter, but to create an atmosphere of joy.”
