Cryptozoology: the science behind the animals of the new Harry Potter movie – The Daily NY

The tape ‘ Fantastic beasts and Where to Find them presents fantastic creatures and figures from mythology that could be explained by a science that studies the origin of animals of legend and reality.

Birds that generate storms when they fly, beings similar to moles with long tubes that can sniff out hidden treasures and animals in the form of apes that can become invisible; get ready for the beasts fantastic.

In the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Fantastic beasts and Where to Find them), derived from the Harry Potter series, the character Newt Scamander uses the "magizoología" (a mix of magic and zoology), a science studied in the imaginary world of spells from JK Rowling, to understand these strange creatures.

But, what in the world of non-wizards, or "muggles" as I would call Harry Potter, there is such a branch of science?

Possibly the "cryptozoology", the pseudoscience that identifies and describes beings as much of legend as of fossil remains , could you give us some clues.

Anthony McAtamney, is an irish 44-year-old who describes himself as a "regular guy" who confesses to an "interest of a whole life in the paranormal and cryptozoology".

"It’s a field of enigmatic that few scientists have explored even though it is only of myths and speculations," he said.

“Remember that the giant squid -the cryptozoology called kraken before being renamed by the science when it was discovered – was not photographed or filmed alive until 2004″.

A guide to "criptozoólogos"

James Newton, a college counselor of disability during the day, is the founder of the Club Cryptozoology of London , that offers advice to all who want to start in that "science".

  • "Read books and not take all the information from the internet, there are a lot of good information on the internet but one has to search among a lot of garbage, too."
  • "in Addition, to investigate old material. Many of the current resources -books, TV programs, etc – they are very agile but shallow.
  • "If people are really interested in zoology in general, and cryptozoology in particular, I recommend that you move as much as they can in the current conventional and, then, work to give greater credibility to at least certain aspects of their studies."
  • "don’t be ashamed of your interests, that is what makes them individuals who think and interesting".

Anthony alludes to one of his heroes and biggest influences in this field, the doctor Karl Shuker .

"I Think it was balanced and, to the extent possible, presented both a fantasy as the real facts around sightings but also offered alternative explanations," he said.

"Also gave examples of how this type of creatures might exist, which almost inspires in me the romantic notion that the world has so much to offer, even when we’re modernizing the most."

"While you have a scientific method, does not lend itself to ridicule. Their work is intellectually stimulating and well-researched".

From the murtlaps , similar creatures, the rat that lives in the coasts, even the mooncalfs , shy beasts that only come out with the full Moon, JK Rowling has added a collection of animal magic around the world spellbound of this, the first tape of what will be the franchise for Fantastic beasts.

And Anthony can see parallels with certain animals identified in the cryptozoology, known as "críptidos".

One of them is the thunderbird (bird lightning), as described in the fable of Potter as "a bird, magic american, closely related to the phoenix," that can "detect danger and create storms when it flies."

Thunderbird is also as they have called one of the house of the school american of charms and sorceries, Ilvermorny.

"people sometimes equate the thunderbirds with the sightings of modern pterosaurs that are reported in Ohio, New Mexico, and Papua New Guinea," said Anthony.

"however, thunderbird is a críptida of north America and has its origin in legends of the native peoples ", he added.

"So the links that makes her (Rowling) to the peoples native americans are very poor and indicative of your research," he said.

"There are theories that the thunderbirds were large birds that took advantage of the currents of the storms to generate warm air ascending and hold your flight, like that of the eagles," he said. "There might have been seen following the path of storms that, in turn, gave way to her fluttering generate lightning".

you can Also see a parallel between the appearance simian of the demiguise with many críptidos that have a morphology simian like humanoid Bigfoot, US and Ebu Gogo, Indonesia.

Although Anthony also believes that there are characteristics of apes of the zoology common present in the character demiguise .

"There are so many real species of monkeys, and especially of the marmoset monkeys that I think looks like", he concluded.
