LONDON, United Kingdom, nov. 8, 2016.- Prince Henry of England repudiated the Tuesday to the media for subjecting his girlfriend Meghan Markle “to a wave of abuse and harassment.” In a statement unusual, the prince confirmed his relationship with the american actress and expressed concern for her safety.
Although the prince of 32 years understands that there is a great deal of curiosity about their private life, the media have overreached in his intrusion, said the office of Enrique.
“prince Henry is concerned for the safety of miss Markle and deeply disappointed by not having been able to protect it,” said the letter from Kensington Palace. “It is not good to a few months to start a relationship with him, miss Markle was subject to such a storm.”
Markle, of 35 years, is known mainly for her role as paralegal Rachel Zane on the tv series “Suits”. He has also worked with United Nations in the field of gender equality and is an ambassador for the global organization World Vision Canada, with which he traveled to Rwanda earlier this year to campaign for clean water.
The tabloids in Great Britain and beyond have swarmed over the story and have speculated about the relationship for weeks, many of them commenting on his mixed heritage and contrasting its origin with that of the prince. The palace said that the harassment has “been very public — the libel in the first page of a national daily; the background racial opinion articles; and the blatant sexism and racism of the trolls in social networks and comments on articles in the network.”
A headline in the Daily Mail called her a “divorced insolent”. Another described his ancestors as “a tailor, a teacher and a wiper in the south racially divided era of legal discrimination — while he fronted the British Empire”. An article from the Daily Mirror linked to Markle with a website of pornography, saying that clips of her in “Suits” were at the site for adults.
The leaders, said the prince, they will say that this is “the price that she must pay” and that “this is part of the game”, something that Enrique “disagree completely”.
“This is no game. It is the life of she and him,” added the text.
The in-depth examination of the relationship drew immediate comparisons with that of the mother of Henry, the late princess Diana, who died in a traffic accident in 1997 while being chased by the paparazzi. It also generated comparisons with the first revelations that Kate Middleton was dating prince William. That relationship was also subject to relentless media attention.
But addressing this issue directly is unusual for the palace, who at first declined to comment on reports of the newspaper Sunday Express about the relationship, following his usual policy to refrain from discussing the personal life of the members of the royal family.
“It’s a very unusual, I cannot think of a precedent for this in recent years,” said Joe Little, managing editor of the magazine Majesty. “Some people think that this is something that he should tolerate, but that’s not in your nature.”
Henry has been linked to numerous women in the past, including another actress, Cressida Bonas. The intrusion of the media also seem to have hurt that relationship.
In 2012, Enrique spoke about the difficulties of finding a partner willing to assume the responsibilities of the kingship.
The palace said that part of the harassment has not been obvious to the public. He pointed out that the mother of Markle has had difficulties to enter in to your residence by the amount of photographers and reporters trying to gain entry illegally to your house, that the ex-boyfriend of the actress has been offered bribes and that their friends and colleagues have been bombarded for information.
“But last week you crossed a line,” said the palace. “His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been the subject of a wave of abuse and harassment.”
The prince said the release was issued with the hope that the media covering the story “may pause and reflect before they cause further damage”.
In a article of 2015 for Elle magazine, Markle wrote candidly about how he agreed that it was a “woman bi-racial”. He said that his mother is african-american while her father is white.
“Although my mixed heritage may have created a gray area around my self-identification, keeping me with one foot on both sides of the fence, I have come to accept it,” he wrote. “Say who I am, share where I come from, to express my pride of being a strong woman, confident, mixed-race”.
