French ‘Dheepan’ wins the Palme d’Or at Cannes – RFI

The French received the highest award from Cannes citing Alexandre Dumas fils, in a time of great excitement for the local cinema. “Dheepan” by Jacques Audiard was honored Sunday night with the coveted Palme d’Or for Best Film Film Festival Cannes

This emotional drama and violent tells the story of three exiles. Dheepan , a veteran of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka, a young woman and her nine year old daughter, who fled civil war in their country and posing as relatives of Dheepan.

None of them speak French, however, Dheepan finds work as a custodian in a violent suburb of Paris where reign narcontraficantes and criminals. Dheepan and his adoptive family will do their best to integrate and understand the French language and culture.

With this award, the Cannes jury, chaired by Joel and Ethan Coen brother surprised the audience and critics because the film Audiard was not among the favorites for the ultimate reward.

“What interested me was from that is a false family that due to the circumstances, becomes a true tribe. That man (Dheepan) before struggling for political reasons. But France will do for those you love, “said Jacques Audiard when the projection of this film

Two young Latin American directors took the stage at closing ceremony for two separate awards:. The Mexican Michel Franco whom the award for Best Screenplay for “Chronic” and the Colombian Cesar Acevedo, Camera d’Or for best first film “Land and shadow” was.

Finally, another Colombian Ciro Guerra won the Art Cinema Award from the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes for “The embrace of the snake,” a film shot entirely in the Amazon jungle.
