BB King dies at age 89 – Voice of America

During his 70 year career BB King popularized the blues genre and influenced countless musicians.

The legendary American guitarist BB King, considered one of the most influential blues musicians of all time, has died at age 89.

The “King of the Blues” died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday night, at home, in the city of Las Vegas, Nevada in the western United States, his lawyer said.

During his career that spanned 70 years, King helped to popularize the blues genre and influenced countless other rock and blues musicians in his deep, soulful voice and unique style of acoustic guitar vibrato.

King was born in 1925 on a cotton plantation in the southern United States, in the state of Mississippi. He began working as a disc jockey and performed at a radio station in Memphis, Tennessee, where he became known as Beale Street Blues Boy, which was later shortened to BB

King, who nicknamed his guitar “Lucille “was introduced to the Hall of Fame Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Blues.
