Picasso beats world record work was auctioned at $ 179.4 million – Trade

An oil Picasso 1955 became the most expensive work of art ever sold to reach 179.4 million dollars at auction at Christie’s on Monday night.

The auction house had estimated that “ Les femmes d’Alger (version ‘O’) ” (“Women of Algiers”) would sell for around $ 140 million, but some of those who led the auction bid up to $ 160 million, to reach a final price of 179.36 million dollars, including a commission of 12 percent.

The buyer’s vibrant Cubist work not was identified.

The most expensive work sold at auction was above the triptych “Three Studies of Lucian Freud” by Francis Bacon, which reached 142.4 million dollars at Christie’s in November 2013.

“It will be fascinating to see how long it lasts,” said Jussi Pylkkanen reference price, global president of Christie’s, who also acted as auctioneer.

The sculpture of Giacometti 1947 “L’homme au doigt” set a world record in sculpture, to be sold for 141.3 million dollars, in line with the presale estimate of about $ 130 million.

The previous record of 104.3 million dollars had been hit by another work of Giacometti, “L’Homme qui marche I” in 2010. (Reuters)
