AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – Norwegian Edvard Munch and the Dutch master Vincent Van Gogh lived at the same time and both reflected his inner demons on the canvas, but never met in person.

A large collection of his paintings, which influenced greatly on modern art of the nineteenth century, they share room the first time in an exhibition that opens on Friday the Museum Van Gogh in Amsterdam.

Both painters broke away from the traditional styles, working with thick brush strokes and shapes of colorful swirls and deep. Although both spent time in Paris in the mid-1880s, their paths never crossed.

Van Gogh, relatively unknown during his lifetime, was nevertheless an influence on Munch, who wrote about the Dutch post-impressionist in his diaries, also shown in the sample.

“I had thought and wanted, like him, not let my flame lamp is turned off and paint with my burning brush until the end” Munch wrote in a tribute to Van Gogh in 1933.

The exhibition is the first version of “The Scream”, on loan from the Munch Museum in Oslo, to be seen in the Netherlands for the first time.

Among others, the exhibition brings together the works of “Starry Night” by Munch, painted in 1922, and “Starry Night Over the Rhone” Van Gogh 1888, demonstrating the influence of Dutch artist on Munch.

The exhibition, with 75 paintings, including Munch other unique pieces like “The Sick Child” and “Madonna,” went through Oslo from May to September when the Munch museum broke its record with 170,000 viewers.

It is expected that the exhibition in Amsterdam is the one that attracts viewers, considering that the Van Gogh Museum received 1.6 million visitors last year. The works will be exhibited until January 17
