Mad Men: ghosts in the machine – Diario El País

A time when men were freer and women earned space. In that sense, men insist on keeping the series, based on obsolete rituals, the last male hope in order to be extinct. Don Draper, Roger Sterling and all his followers are thus the only heroes standing of a doomed generation to be the last of his kind.

In the sample on the series producer, Matthew Weiner, own cured to the Museum of the Moving Image (the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, New York, about 20 minutes from Manhattan) it is more than clear. Draper’s office, shared kitchen when he was married to Betty, both reconstructed with precision museísitica are dioramas of a lost world. Beefeater bottles and Smirnoff are there in the little bar Draper and is the chair where many times we saw him take a nap like waiting. No one will come: Mad Men is a story about ghosts of a time already gone. A time you see through a glass.

The exhibition, which will until June 14 and if you are a fan of the series will walk by those sides, can not and should not stop ver- also includes a reproduction of the room where the equipment Weiner works in the chapters of the series, a bibliography and a basic filmography in which it was inspired, locker rooms, objects created for the series (personal cards of each character, for example, or those American Spirit deposit box smoked nonstop) and a series of clips that anyone who sees the series can only look on with excitement. The series is full of great moments.

And visit the exhibition, titled Mad Men Matthew Weiners is to understand how, after all, the series (considered one of the best of all time for its history and excellence of its production) is not more than the chronicle of the end of the American dream. Weiner has said that the series (with its air John Cheever confirmed by a lovely quote at the beginning of the exhibition), is not necessarily about the world of advertising, although elapses there, but about human conflicts of any ecosystem.

The exhibition in Queens coincide with the release of the final season of the series whose first chapter was released Sunday in the United States and Uruguay as you can see on HBO (it repeated today at 20:20, Thursday at 19:00 and Sunday 13 at 10 am). Ends on May 17.

Mad Men not only was following a group of advertisers over 60 (the end of this season set in 1970) with their comings and goings personal, family and economic, but was a summary of a decade that some still call prodigious but others suffered.

The group is led by Don Draper (a role he was forced to make Jon Hamm star), a man with a complicated past (actually called Dick Whitman, the son of a prostitute and stole the identity of a dead beside her soldier war); a successful but complicated present (separated twice, has two children, his first ex-wife hates it) and a future millionaire, but just as complicated as anyone who looks back at her life as the world falls down around him.

Around him walk, primarily, the timid and industrious Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss), the donjuanesco Roger (John Slattery), the voluptuous Joan (Christina Hendricks) and ambitious Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser), among others coterie of an advertising agency where the day begins with a meeting with vodka and cigarettes, essential ingredients of the basic diet of the place. Mad Men The name comes from a pun on Madison Avenue where advertising agencies in New York and Mad (“Crazy”) are. The action begins in a fictitious agency Sterling & amp; Cooper, but in the history of advertising real milestones and American history are mentioned.

The idea of this ghostly world is clear in the first chapter of this season end, “Severance”. Draper lives surrounded by casual lovers dream but when one of his first loves (first season) and learns that died that begins to fall into a melancholy that, it appears, will consume throughout the season.

Peggy, who is the other main character of the story, is also aware that it is not the same as that of eight years ago. Meet the tools to live in a male world (a lesson not yet learned Joan as shown in a scene both in an elevator after being battered by a little cordial males), but in turn longs for teenage dream of going to Paris and miss. The temptation to start again, as Don did when he killed that was and became this successful man is a constant throughout the series. In the first episode, Betty, the ex-wife, and Sally, her teenage daughter.

do not appear Weiner devised Mad Men in 2000 but delayed its realization until after working as Sopranos writer, a position he got when David Chase, producer, just read that script. The first program aired in July 2007 AMC chain (the same as Breaking Bad) cable and has since won, among other awards, 15 Emmys and four Golden Globes. It’s been eight years, what madness.

The characters of Mad Men are jerks, yes, but when you walk through that sample at the Museum of Moving Image realizes that they are going to miss. Not bad for a group of drunken advertisers and cigarette smell.

Where was left the series?

The first half of the seventh season of Mad Men ended in a historic moment: all the characters, with their own dramas, saw live and direct the landing of Neil Armstrong. It had been many things (and if you do not already got there better not read more): Don Draper lost his job, became a divorce when the beautiful Megan decided to stay in Los Angeles and, after the death of Bert Cooper, one of the founding partners of Sterling & amp; Cooper returned to the agency, for those things in advertising, is now part of McCann Erickson. The last scene showed Don Draper Bert seeing the ghost dance “The Best Things in Life are Free”, as he leans back in his chair and begins to mourn. That melancholy tone is present in the first chapter of the series, with other ghosts haunt cynical publicist who plays Jon Hamm.
