Sherlock 4×03: why is this scene of Holmes and Lestrade is so significant? | Season 4-Episode 3 – The Press

CARE, ALERT SPOILER. One of the most significant moments of the end of the fourth season of Sherlock may have been overlooked by several fans and that’s why it is worth to put it in a box.

once the threat of Eurus (Sian Brooke), Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John (Martin Freeman) were evacuated from Sherrinford by the authorities, with Lestrade (Rupert Graves) to the head, and then happened something unexpected: Sherlock recalled for the first time the name of the inspector.

"Thank you, Greg," said the detective consultant to Lestrade, who could not believe what he was hearing. After four seasons, Sherlock Holmes called him by his name.

As well noted Buzzfeed, Sherlock changed its name to Lestrade for almost all the episodes of the series, calling it Graham or Giles. In addition, always esteemed the inspector, who in all ways she learned to see him as a partner and friend.

"(Sherlock) does not matter to him and knows that he does not need it, but then, as you have seen, in the end, remember," said Mark Gattis, one of the creators of Sherlock, during a press conference after a special broadcast of 'The Final Problem' (4×03).

In turn, Steven Moffat, the other creator of Sherlock, he explained that Sherlock "likes a bit of playing games with people and keeps them at a distance… so when it really matters, remember your name."

in Addition to the recognition of Sherlock, Lestrade has a few words that evoke the very beginning of the drama BBC One. In the first episode, the inspector tells John that " Sherlock is a great man and I believe that one day, if we are very, very lucky, you might even be a good one" and at last, Lestrade points out the following when a young man police described Sherlock as a "great man":

"No, it’s better than that. It’s a good one".
