Die British writer Ruth Rendell – The Universal

The prolific author of detective novels Ruth Rendell, known for his character Inspector Wexford, died Saturday, said his publisher Penguin Random House. He was 85.
 


 Rendell suffered a stroke in January.
 


 


 It was one of the most popular novelists of the detective genre in Britain, author of dozens of books, many under the pseudonym Barbara Vine.
 


 


 Rendell was a member of the House of Lords and received many awards throughout his career. Inspector Wexford books led to a television series of large audience.
 


 


 His first forays into literature was a “very bad” novels were not published, he told The Associated Press in an interview in 2005.
 


 


 But then he discovered that “suspense and a kind of tension and mystery were my strengths.”
 


 


 Once he found his way, Rendell was an amazing amount of novels: 60 in four decades, 20 of them featuring Inspector Wexford.
 


 


 His crime novels classical structure is characterized by the inquiry into the psychology of the characters, people in common appearance, but capable of committing heinous crimes.
 


 


 “I do not think the world is a particularly pleasant place,” Rendell said. “Certainly it is for some. But it is an unforgiving place, and I do not be cynical to say.”
 


 


 She was appointed to the House of Lords by the Labour government of Tony Blair in 1997 and used to attend the afternoon sessions after devoting the morning to write. His official title was Baroness Rendell of Babergh.
 


 


 Many readers came to feel a strong identification by the fictitious Wexford.
 


 


 “With a character like Wexford, many people come to consider a real person I feel a great affinity” he said. “Over the years I have received many letters from women who have asked me to kill his wife because they are in love and want to marry him.”
 


 


 Spent hours walking through London to absorb the cityscape and conversations. He was also fond of opera.
 


 


 Her husband, Donald Rendell, died in 1999.
