Coppola read Cervantes to learn of Asturias – El Universal

Francis Ford Coppola , parent of classics such as The Godfather and director of global cult, was honored Wednesday with the Prize Princess Asturias for the Arts, the first to be granted under the new name in honor of the heir to the throne of Spain, Leonor of Spain.
 


 “It’s an honor to be recognized with the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts I accept it with gratitude, while I realize that, coincidentally, was in the middle of reading Don Quixote;. So in words Cervantes’ destination guide our fortunes more favorably than we had expected. “Thanks” Coppola said in a statement released by the Princess of Asturias Foundation.
 


 


 Coppola, 76, has won five Oscar throughout his career, in which some 60 films as a director and scriptwriter and over 70 as a producer are counted.
 


 


 His films have been awarded many times by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and at festivals such as Cannes. He directed the trilogy of The Godfather in addition to tapes of worship as Revelation and Rumble Fish ( The law of the street ) . He also co-wrote Patton .
 


 


 “Narrator exceptional, occupies a prominent place in the history of cinema” , said the jury award. “His career has been a continuous struggle to maintain total entrepreneurial and creative independence in all facets has evolved as director, producer and screenwriter.”
 


 


 Born into an Italian-American family, Coppola grew up in New York and studied at the film school at UCLA in Los Angeles. His father, Carmine Coppola, was an instrumentalist and composer.
 


 


 Coppola has been for many a transgressor not always communed with the operation of Hollywood. The Godfather trilogy in which adapted the novel by Mario Puzo on the lives of several generations of a mafia family, is considered a masterpiece by some experts, particularly its first two parts.
 


 


 “The figure of Francis Ford Coppola is imperative to understand the transformation and contradictions of the film industry and art, whose growth has been instrumental” , said the jury.
 


 


 “Thematic and formal Renewal, his explorations around the power and the horrors and absurdity of war have transcended his art, becoming collective and universal imaginary icons and contemporary culture” .
 


 


 The Arts is the first of eight Princess of Asturias Awards to be bestowed this year. It is the first time in the 35 year history of the event that this name, instead of Prince of Asturias, after Philip VI became king of Spain in June 2014 is used.
 


 


 Succession to the Crown after the abdication of Juan Carlos left the title Princess of Asturias to Leonor, 9, eldest daughter of Felipe and Letizia kings and current heir.
 


 


 In the coming weeks awards Concordia Social Sciences, Communication, Humanities, Technical and Scientific Research, Letters, International Cooperation, Sports and fail.
 


 


 Each of the awards, created in 1981, is endowed with 50 000 euros (56 dollars mil150) and a sculpture designed by the artist Joan Miró. The awards will be presented in October in Oviedo.
