The group Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät, consisting of intellectually disabled, attend to Vienna to interpret the theme “Whenever I have that.”

The punk band Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät (PKN), formed by four musicians with intellectual disabilities, will represent Finland in the next Eurovision Song Contest. The Finnish public has chosen the band during the final preselection that public television in the country organized annually to designate the artist who goes to the famous musical event.

Pertti Kurikka (guitar), Kari Aalto (voice ), Sami Helle (bass) and Toni Välitalo (drums), who have Down syndrome and autism, created the band in late 2009 during a cultural workshop to give a boost to the social programs that help people who have this type of disabilities. Experience liked it so much they decided to start making versions of local punk bands and composing his own songs. Thus was born his first album in 2010 entitled ‘Ei yhteiskunta yhtä miesta kaipaa “(roughly translated as” Nobody is indispensable in the company’), a paper published by a small Finnish label alternative rock containing three original songs and three versions .

Few launched after “Osaa eläimetkin pieree” (“Even animals know fart”), one medium-length album with songs like “You are not normal” and “Default speech” in the who criticize the prejudices they face in their daily lives.

However, they did not reach some popularity until 2012, when two Finnish filmmakers filmed an intimate documentary about the band showed their energetic performances, joys on stage and fights out of it. The documentary, titled in English “The Punk Syndrome” won several awards and launched the career of the group, to the point that they were invited to perform in countries like the US, Canada, Britain, Germany and Norway.

“Whenever I have to” Song for Vienna
The theme defend Eurovision is entitled ‘Aina pitää mun “(literally” Whenever I have to “) and talks about the need to do things continuously, because “If a person does nothing, falls into boredom and decadence”, says on the website of YLE Kari, singer with Down syndrome and author of the lyrics. “I always have to clean / always have to scrub / always have to go to work / always have to go to the doctor,” sings Kari in true punk style, then complain about things that do not allow them to do, including drinking alcohol.

And, although fans of artists like the Beach Boys and Bob Marley are declared, these four musicians found in a style so little punk Eurovision as the ideal vehicle to express their feelings and their anger, since “let say things like,” Kari says. “Making music is fun. If there is no music, the world would be a totally stupid place, “says Kari to explain why they decided to form the group over five years.

Finland won Eurovision in 2006 with Lordi and his famous” Hard rock hallelujah ‘. Last year, the group achieved an eleventh SoftEngine commendable position, the best result in the contest for the Nordic country since winning
