Aspired to write poetry, but when he was very young he realized that his path lay in another genre, one in which he became one of the leaders of the Spanish literature in recent years. Yesterday Ricardo Piglia lost his battle against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a disease against which she fought since 2013.
"I Am a reader continuous of poetry, I am even more aware of what is happening with poetry in Latin America that what happens in the narrative. I try to read all the poetry I can in the languages I know, and I think that is the genre to which we all aspire, basically because, with very few words, express senses and emotions multiple. That ability to say much with few words it is the horizon that we have the writers," he said in an interview with MILLENNIUM in 2013.
Born in the town of buenos aires to Adrogué, 24 November 1941, Piglia was considered one of the best exponents of the new era of argentine narrative, who, despite the illness, she was lucid to the scripture; even in last November confessed to EFE that she had just finished a book of short stories and working on another on the short stories of Juan Carlos Onetti.
The literature allowed him to "keep yourself alive", after that in 2013 he was diagnosed with the ALS, an illness that affects their mobility but not to the mental faculties, and that meant that in his last times especially is in need of basic support for reading and work.
"The illness has made me discover the experience of the absolute injustice. Why me?, is question one and any response is ridiculous. The injustice in the pure state causes us to rebel and persist in the struggle," said Piglia.
REQUIREMENT OF CLARITY
The writer said to a writer privileged because it achieved a recognition among the readers that many other authors of quality have not been reached: it was one of the pens most brilliant of Spanish-american literature, with titles such as artificial Respiration, Plata quemada, to The city absent and White night.
"it seems to Me that we are obliged to a need of clarity, not in the sense of simplification, but in saying what we mean in the clearest way possible, which involves a work style that is much more complex, because it seems to me that around us about social languages, where everything is obscured by the clichés, common languages, and the false simplifications. That is the first responsibility of the writer," said Piglia in another interview with MILLENNIUM in 2013.
The writer used to remember that when he left his hometown to settle with his family in Mar del Plata, at 14 years of age, was when he discovered the literary world. He explained that the move was due to "a political history, a thing of grudges and hatreds neighborhood" that forced the family to settle in Buenos Aires.
In 1967 he published his first book of stories, The invasion, which earned a special mention in the Seventh Contest of Casa de las Americas; eight years later, in 1975, the writer released his second volume of short stories, false Name, which was translated into French and Portuguese.
Then came a series of novels that marked his destination in the literary, much of it featuring his alter ego, Emilio Renzi. He earned awards such as the prize of Ibero-american Narrative Manuel Rojas, in 2013, and the Formentor de las Letras, in September 2015.
MEMORIOUS
some years Ago, Piglia had undertaken the task of reminding itself through the project of The diaries of Emilio Renzi, whose first volume, Years of training, appeared in 2015, which was supplemented with The happy years, and A day in the life.
In the first of the series will cover the years 1957 to 1967, where highlights the question "how do I convert someone into a writer —or become a writer?".
"it is Not a vocation, to whom it happens, is not a decision either, looks more like a hobby, a habit, an addiction, if you stop doing it you feel worse, but having to do it is ridiculous, and at the end becomes a way of life (as any other)," he writes in the volume.
"we’re in a time in which the literature is in question," he commented in 2013, "the novel, the fiction basically: there’s a sort of fascination with the actual facts, which comes in a number of ways, from journalism or the culture of the masses on the internet where everyone is telling their real stories, and I defend very much the space of fiction as a space of very special, because it is neither true nor false".
After for Piglia was very complicated to travel, to be seen by its readers, until the news of his departure was expanded yesterday morning.
