Rome reopens the steps of the Plaza of Spain after a costly restoration – Investing.com Spain

Rome reopened the famous Plaza of Spain after a restoration with private funding, but urged visitors to try to the staircase of the EIGHTEENTH century, with the greatest respect to preventing re-deterioration.

The place was closed since last October while the technicians cleaned and repaired the monument.

The jewelry maker roman Bulgari paid 1.5 million euros (1.7 million dollars) to fix up the 135 steps, which had come loose, stained and broken by the daily use of the citizens and the thousands of visitors.

The steps where Audrey Hepburn is found with Gregory Peck in the film in 1953, “roman Holiday” were subjected to a chemical and mechanical cleaning. Added pieces of stone in some parts and removed herbs of the balustrade.

Stop halfway down the staircase that connects Plaza de España with the church Trinita dei Monti, the mayor of Rome Virginia Raggi said he ordered the police to watch over the behavior of the people in the place and to avoid “camp” at the monument.

“I Think that it is essential to let people use this place and also to hold them accountable for that use,” said Raggi, adding that “this has frequently become abuse.”

Bulgari is one of the several companies that responded to the request of Italy’s biggest investors in private to help fix the ancient monuments whose condition has deteriorated after years of spending cuts.
