The women of the greater Spanish spy of the nazis almost gives you away because I hated living in London – Publimetro Chile

Araceli Gonzalez, la wife of the Spanish spy Juan Pujol Garcia, aka “Garbo” -the most important double agent of the United Kingdom in the second World War- almost lifted its cover, to not be able to endure his life in England, reveal a few official documents declassified today.

These reports, written by the service of counter-espionage british MI5 and made public by the National Archives, Kew, explains how, in 1943, the young wife and mother, threatened to go to the Spanish embassy and to disclose the identity of her husband if not allowed to travel to Spain to see her family.

The couple resided in the town of Harrow, near London, from where he supposedly was responsible for the nazis a network of sub-agents, which were in fact fictitious and concealing his work for MI5.

The declassified transcripts show that, to avoid being recognized, Pujol kept his wife and his two children locked in the house and controlled, which ended hartando to Araceli, who threatened to go to the Spanish embassy and tell of it all.

“I don’t want to live even five minutes more with my husband,” snapped the young man to the british officer in charge of “Garbo”, Tomas Harris, according to reports.

“Even if I kill it, I’m going to the embassy”, he added.

The MI5 could not let it go because it would have raised the lid of Pujol, who had been hired in 1942, after checking that he had gained the trust of the nazi regime, with the alias “Garbo”, and an alleged employment as a translator of the public broadcaster BBC.

in order To avoid a crisis, the agent Harris was deceived by Araceli, telling him that her husband had been laid off by his attitude foolish.

Pujol was even more far away, so, to eradicate any trace of rebellion, he suggested to mount a plot to make you believe his wife had been jailed while trying to defend it -which led her to star in an apparent suicide attempt-.

As part of this assembly, the agents of the MI5 took Araceli to see her husband at the detention center where he was supposedly a prisoner, what did she promise to behave well to change that to leave him in freedom.

Harris praises in the document the skill of Pujol to the plot a sham “that allowed us to save a situation that, otherwise, would have been intolerable”.

In another document released today, reveals that in 1945, Harris valued infiltrate the Spanish spy in the Russian secret service, to serve as a source in the Government of Joseph Stalin as the face of the impending Cold War.

This in the end was not carried out and the double agent and his wife went to live in Venezuela, where he died in 1988, and she died in Madrid two years later.
