Bruce Springsteen? Happy birthday / To the expectation of “Born to Run” – Freedom of Speech Yucatan

MADRID, Spain, 23 September.- Written by Diego A. Manrique in The Country: To the 67 years, which meets today, Bruce Springsteen is in an impasse now frequent between the first division of the rock: their disks are less and less impact while increasing the pull of your direct. In the case of Bruce, there are small nuances eye-catching: it attracts an audience more faithful and fervent in Europe than in their own country. In the united States, Springsteen is a victim of the political polarization between republicans and democrats: some of their old fans deplore his progressive positions and do not deprive it of pointing out a supposed inconsistency with his lifestyle of a billionaire.

His autobiography, Born to Run (Literatura Random House), which goes on sale on the 27th of September in all the world, has something of accountability. Although we are not faced with a sphinx to Bob Dylan: Bruce has been very talkative in their interviews and in the many parliaments that was used in the scenarios. In fact, his followers will recognize his voice on the paper: those ellipses which are equivalent to the dramatic pauses, the phrases in capital letters that deserve a beating of the drums of Max Weinberg, those strings of words that aspire to evoke the ineffable.

Some evil might ask if there is something really new to tell about Bruce Springsteen: his life and work have been explored in dozens of books. Even has a biographer unofficial, Dave Marsh, integrated in its network professional: he is married to Barbara Carr, the lieutenant of his manager, Jon Landau. Marsh has published four volumes on Bruce between 1979 and 2006.

But it turns out that, yes, the epic can be revived with poetry and eloquence: Born to Run contains paragraphs formidable. When necessary, it also relies on the rawness. Springsteen portrays the poverty of his childhood and youth. Two urban tribes that coexist in this corner of New Jersey: the ra-rahs (posh, as we would say here) and the greasers (macarrillas); Bruce seems doomed to be forever a greaser. Although, yes, with success among women, especially when you plug your electric guitar.

Sister pregnant

But your family is drifting. His sister Virginia gets pregnant at the age of 16, although "no one noticed until she was six months". In 1968, his parents and his other sister, Pamela, migrate to California and Bruce malvive with his friends, counting every penny. Literally: I didn’t want to gut the story of the day that you must pay the toll of the Lincoln tunnel and you are missing a coin. The social climate in Freehold, New Jersey, is roughly: after being run over (by a Cadillac 63, specifies), in the hospital trying to cut off his mane.

once in a while, I tend to stop for offenses such as hitchhiking (in his world, the main function of the police is to keep at bay the rabble). It’s up to your mother to go to pay the bail and get him out of the police station. Adele, with roots in neapolitan, it is the heart of Springsteen, but Bruce still regrets that her husband acaparara large doses of love.

In truth, Born to Run could have been titled me and My father. Douglas Springsteen was a man cold and hard, laconic and bitter. Spared any displays of affection towards his son, who, still today, he can barely contain his frustration. In 1994, after picking up an Oscar for the song Streets of Philadelphia, Bruce flies from Los Angeles to northern California to "plant the statuette to him." Your parent recognizes his mistake: "Never again I will tell no one what you have to do". Your so clumsy, the old man has tried to compensate for it: it takes fishing to Mexico, in an expedition disastrous, as they navigate a dangerous shell, Bruce can’t help but think that it could have asked the yacht to his friend Ted Turner.

With the time, diagnosed that Douglas suffers from schizophrenia schizoid. And Bruce discovers that there’s something in the rumor that Springsteen tend to suffer mental problems. The revelation of Born to Run are his bouts of depression, which have embittered the last few decades. Now overcome thanks to psychoanalysis and medication, amazes to know that they weren’t even aware the "brethren" of the E Street Band.

we have to highlight the obvious: to Bruce, the music has had top priority; only when they reached the children, with Patti Scialfa (not by chance a member of the group) began to distribute its energies. The music own and others: Springsteen reaches the peaks of lyricism when he talks about the impact of certain artists and songs in your existence; it is only logical that the manager that has taken the greater part of his career is a former critic of rock.

Since 1971, Bruce acts as the captain of your ship: does not support democracy in their artistic approach. He has studied the trajectories of the big stars and do not believe in the "live fast, die young and leave a beautiful corpse". Is a perfectionist, a control freak. Acknowledge that your behavior has not always been exemplary with the band of the E Street Band, though —in response to a request for salary increase— he boasts of being a boss is extremely generous. Doesn’t regret his ruthless business model: away from the clubs and theaters in which he forged his legend, he has specialized in concerts in spaces massive, offset —it is supposed— by its long duration. Although initially rejects the music of the Grateful Dead, he ends up understanding that they have accomplished something really big: to create a community.

fear Not: even after devouring Born to Run, there are many mysteries to be clarified. It is amazing that —sorry— a country poorly educated, with little access to the cultural universe, to come out with songs as literary as the ones that have earned the trust of John Hammond, and other exquisite new yorkers. Some were fed by experiences (the glorious rosalita’s going to talk to the first girlfriend with whom he had sexual intimacy), but also had extraordinary ambition creative, who knew how to encourage Landau. Finally, Born to Run warns that there is still gas in your engine.
To forced marches

In contrary to what is usual, Bruce was released to write Born to Run without a contract publisher. With the advanced project, negotiated with Simon & Schuster, an advance of nine million euros. They sold the rights in different languages and the translators began to work on a text incomplete. The book seems to have been finished off to matacaballo.

Conceived for pleasant reading (79 short chapters), there appears to have been an edition rigorous. We reiterate anecdotes and descriptions; it may happen that a trip begins in a Dodge and finished in a Pontiac. Abound the skids in dates: towards 1971-1972, when already tops the Bruce Springsteen Band, says that it ignored Woodstock. The festival was in 1969, a typo that a good editor would have caught.
