The architecture of Wroclaw starring debut as European cultural capital – Terra Colombia

The contemporary architecture today carries the acts with which the Polish city of Wroclaw began its year as European Capital of Culture, a title he shares with the Spanish San Sebastián.

If yesterday was the “Sonoridades” exhibition of Eduardo Chillida San Sebastian, today is the exhibition “Made in Europe” which summarizes the 25 year history of the architecture prize awarded by the European Commission and the Mies van der Rohe and serves as a prelude to the ceremony that officially inaugurated tomorrow Wroclaw its year as European Capital of Culture.

“Made in Europe” is not only an exhibition on architecture, it is also a vision of contemporary architecture as part of European identity, represented in more than 3,000 drawings, videos, maps and models of the most significant buildings of recent years, the spokesman told Efe Museum of Architecture Wroclaw (Wroclaw, in Polish), Marta Czyz.

The award granted by the European Commission and the Mies van der Rohe is worth 60,000 euros ($ 65,400), and is one of the most important prizes in contemporary architecture.

Among the projects presented today in Wroclaw, Czyz stressed the Waterloo train station in London, designed by Nicholas Grimshaw (which won first prize in 1994), the Museum of Contemporary Art Castilla y Leon, MUSAC (winner in 2007), by Luis M. Mansilla and Emilio Tunon, and the building of the National Opera in Oslo (awarded in 2009), the study Snøhetta.

The exhibition “Made in Europe” anticipates the 366 days during which the city of Wroclaw is one of two European Capitals of Culture, a title created by the European Union in 1985 .

“This is an exceptional opportunity to publicize the cultural richness of Wroclaw and Poland,” he told Efe the former Minister of Culture and Youth Malgorzata Omilanowska.

During the year of cultural capital, Wroclaw provides over a thousand cultural events, a sign of the great interest aroused in culture and the Polish people, especially in this city, he added Omilanowska, who hopes the title serves to publicize this part of southwestern Poland.

The truth is that Wroclaw, Poland’s fourth city in population (over 600,000), is one of the unknown for foreign tourists coming to Poland, and is surprised to visit a city that was part of Germany until the end of World War II.

Wroclaw is definitely one of the best examples of the melting pot of Central Europe, because what lagro the centuries has been part of the Kingdom of Poland, Bohemia, Austro -Hungarian, Prussia and Germany, to finally return to Poland.

The official opening ceremony of the Year of the European Capital of Culture will take place tomorrow at noon with a concert inspired by the works of one of the most important composers of the postwar period, Iannis Xenakis.

The music will be accompanied by an exhibition of photographs of Melina Mercouri, a founder of the title of European Capital of Culture.

Also Sunday, a big media event show “Four Spirits of Wroclaw”: the spirit of innovation, the spirit of water, the spirit of Religious Diversity and Spirit Restoration, who will walk through the streets of the city.
