Paul Kantner dies guitarist “Jefferson Airplane” – El Universal

The guitarist Paul Kantner, who was one of the founders of the famous psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane, died today at age 74 in San Francisco (USA), the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Kantner, who died due to multiple organ failure, dragged health problems in recent years and had suffered in March 2015 a heart attack.

Born March 17, 1942 in San Francisco, Kantner of Jefferson Airplane formed, one of the flagship bands of Californian psychedelia and sound of the sixties.

The idea to form the group came from the singer Marty Balin, who was commissioned to recruit partners including Kantner found.

The band completed their initial training with fellow guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, singer Signe Toly, bassist Bob Harvey and drummer Jerry Peloquin.

Jefferson Airplane began operation in 1965 and emerged as one of the cornerstones of the effervescent acid and San Francisco music scene thanks to albums like “Surrealistic Pillow” (1967) and songs like “Somebody To Love” and “White Rabbit”.

The group also participated in memorable festivals such as the hippie era of Woodstock, Monterey and Altamont.

The band experienced constant changes in its composition and Kantner reorganized in 1974 by the Jefferson Airplane singer Grace Slick Jefferson Starship under the name.

Before that, Kantner gave the go-ahead to his solo career thanks to their debut album “Blows Against the Empire” (1970).

The late guitarist also was part of the meeting of Jefferson Airplane in 1989.
