PARIS The French director Jacques Rivette, one of the greatest exponents of the Film stream dubbed “the new wave” (nouvelle vague, in French), died today at the age of 87 years, announced sources close to the director.

The director was considered by the Swiss Jean Luc Godard one of the greatest exponents of the current “new wave”, an unorthodox style that had its heyday in French cinema in the decade of the 50s and 60s.

Rivette is remembered in France for directed the films “Paris Belongs to Us”, “The beautiful liar” and “Mad Love,” among others.

He directed his first feature in 1949 and filmed some thirty films throughout his career.

“Jacques Rivette was one of the greatest filmmakers. He scored several generations. His work unusual earned him international recognition, “he stressed in a statement the French President Francois Hollande, in which he sent condolences to the family.
