The clashes between police and protesters around La Scala Sunday marked the opening of what will be the last season of the Israeli Argentine director Daniel Barenboim at Milan theater.
Police prevented about 300 demonstrators from entering the glamorous theater, dating from the eighteenth century and in which Barenboim conducted Fidelio, Beethoven’s only opera.
In La Scala was, along with other personalities, the managing director of Interancional Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde.
Demonstrators protesting government austerity measures and labor market reform to facilitate the dismissal of workers.
Authorities said two officers were injured when demonstrators threw petrol bombs and flares them.
