Much Ado About Nothing for the controversial film – lanacion.com (Argentina)

After several twists and turns, finally Sony Pictures decided to release at Christmas his comedy A crazy interview , as originally planned. The film can be seen in dozens of American independent rooms and, on payment of $ 6 at sites on demand as YouTube and Google Play.

This parody about a plan to murder North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un made headlines the world after the alleged terrorist group Guardians of Peace, which already had claimed the catastrophic hack to the Sony studios in mid-November threatened to actions to “remind the September 11, 2001″ if the film was commercially exhibited. The tenor of the threats seemed to confirm the suspicion (hitherto supported only by the displeasure expressed by the North Korean state before the production of the film) that the communist regime was behind the group and was ultimately responsible for the hacking .

In the film, Seth Rogen and James Franco are, respectively, producer and star of Skylark Tonight , a program gossip receiving the offer to Report to Kim Jong-un, who would be a fan of the conductor. The CIA plans to take advantage of the occasion to orchestrate his assassination, which must be carried out by journalists. The story follows the model of the previous films duo Seth Rogen / Evan Goldberg: two characters, one hopelessly stupid and another a little more rational, they are placed in a scenario that are outside (the world of adults in Supercool , the apocalypse in This is the end , North Korea in this case) that serves as an excuse for jokes stoners or unhooked more or less effective and relevant.

In this case, humor is so generic and so thick line that could appear in any context: the first time a character a bulky object is inserted into the anus is hilarious; the third is desperate. Clearly, the film never becomes the promised political satire. Above, the Supreme Leader of North Korea is by far the smartest character cast. Its peculiarities (fanaticism by Katy Perry, basketball and revelry) is a strategy to seduce their partners, who handles at will. Although it is difficult to predict what might offend a lifelong dictator, there is nothing in the film that shows what more grotesque than any of the reports that appear daily in the press mode. In fact, if the film is a poignant comment reservation, it is against the tabloids rather than against totalitarianism, which is caricatured harmlessly. Clearly, the aim of this film is not cause any reflection but laugh, by whatever means, which is not always achieved. North Korea is here a marketing strategy, an argument of sale, judging by events, proved much more effective than expected.

The film received an unprecedented attention for a comedy after the ultimatum Guardians of Peace. The first response from Sony Pictures was to cancel its release on the grounds of protecting the public, but that decision had the opposite effect to that intended: to Barack Obama said the total submission to the demands of a terrorist group was not an exemplary gesture. “We can not have a society that supports a dictator imposes censorship in the United States,” he said. A few days later, in a new refill of his convictions, Sony ordered the release of the film as a sign of their unwavering commitment to freedom of expression (while sending his lawyers to sue any media to report on the content of hacks).

Those words of Obama, backed by an FBI investigation, echoed journalistic speculations were made and attributed the cyber attack and threats to the North Korean state. However, many independent experts from government, it is unlikely that North Korea is responsible for the attacks, or at least, that the evidence presented by the FBI are far from conclusive.

As Sony Pictures this year went through a restructuring, these experts consider it more likely that the hack was made by a former employee with knowledge of the computer system of the company. In fact, those responsible for the hack did references to the film or that country until the press imagined that link. All involved have something to gain from this story: Sony company becomes a victim of a terrorist attack, it generates empathy, and not their own incompetence; the government finds an excuse to resurrect the idea that the Internet Control is a matter of national security; the North Korean regime remains a state able to subdue an international mega-corporation and to the film ceases to be a harmless comedy to become the most controversial release of the year. The only gained nothing, as usual, was the public. .
