Using e-books before bed can affect sleep – The Universal

The use of eBook with its own light or other light sources such can change the circadian rhythms and negatively affect the dream , according to a study published today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America .

The dim light during sunset is important for circadian rhythms, allowing the production of Melatonin , a substance that regulates sleep.

To examine the effect caused in the dream the bright artificial light , such as producing electronic bo oks with their own light, a group of researchers, led by Anne-Marie Chang, Brigham Hospital, compared the sleep quality of a group of people reading e-books as much paper.

During the study, a dozen people read, in dim light, for five consecutive days an eBook with own lighting, four hours before bedtime, and then did the same but with a printed book.

Chang explained that when study participants read an “e-book” self-illuminating “They took longer to fall asleep, had less drowsiness during dusk, secrete less melatonin and the next morning alertness was reduced,” which when reading a traditional book.

When using an electronic book reader, according to the study, research participants showed levels contents of Melatonin at dusk and changes in circadian rhythms of sleep and wakefulness.
