A powerful technique of X-ray revealed a hidden portrait under a famous painting by French impressionist Edgar Degas.
An article published this week in the journal Scientific Reports revealed that the image hidden under the work Portrait of a woman is, in fact, the portrait of another woman. Australian researchers believe that this is Emma Dobigny, one of the favorite models of the painter.
For nearly a century ago, experts knew that Degas had painted the famous portrait of another image sometime between 1876 and 1880. as growing old paint, a faint hint of what appeared to be another woman began to poke through the top layers of paint.
the staff of the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, where find the picture, I wanted to see what was underneath, but the traditional techniques of X-ray photography with infrared were not powerful enough to reveal any details.
Scientists at the Australian Synchotron scanned 33 hours painting X-ray high definition. The technique was so successful that not only could see the details of the hidden image, but also its evolution. For example, Degas seemed to have painted the woman’s ears are shaped like elfin, but later modified to give them a more conventional way. (I)
