Zendaya is hated for being the new Mary Jane in “Spider-Man” – Publimetro Chile

In these times of political correctness and -necesaria- inclusion, many wonder if the creative industries are not going too far or being too frivolous to use labels such as feminism, gender or race to sell more tickets. And with the discussion that led “The Ghostbusters” female, now it was announced that Zendaya, African American actress, will play the iconic Mary Jane Watson, “Spider-Man”.

Something that is not new in these times, where classic comics and characters, as well as literary sagas, reinvent themselves to show more representative. Now Iron Man is not a charismatic and egocentric fifty genius but a teenager quinceanera. Captain America is also African American. Thor is a woman. Hermione Granger in “Harry Potter” is also black.

And of course, in the movies, they make female versions of movies like “Ocean’s Eleven”. And many wonder what, apart from the celebration of those who see these changes as a step forward, it is “necessary?”. And this happened to Zendaya

First of all, it has a large load. The character has red hair and is iconic for that. And Kirsten Dunst gave the size in three films of “Spiderman”. She is a woman with a history of domestic violence behind and bad relationships. It also has a complicated relationship with Peter Parker.

Second, many say they are not racist to criticize the choice of the artist. Simply wanted a tighter the canon comic book character.

Other, of course, scoff at the choice of the actress.

Like her, other cases caused controversy, but not as much as now. Nick Fury, for example, in the original comic is a white man who ended up playing Samuel L. Jackson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And he was so good, that everybody forgot that “fit”.

Another success was the editor of “Planet” Perry White, amusingly played by Lawrence Fishburne in “Batman vs . Superman “.

But not everyone was well: the Kingpin played by the late Michael Clarke Duncan was not ruined by the actor, but the lousy script of the movie “Daredevil” which starred Ben Affleck. In the comics, the Kingpin is a formidable foe with a huge and traumatic past and a mobster who literally almost destroys the life of the hero.
