X-ray, managed to solve a mystery of the art world – Clarín.com

A powerful technique of X-ray revealed a hidden portrait under a famous painting by French impressionist Edgar Degas, helping to solve a mystery that intrigued for decades the art world.

An article published this week in the online journal Scientific Reports published Nature– –del group revealed that the image hidden under the work “Portrait of a woman” is, in fact, the portrait of another woman. Australian researchers believe that Emma is Dobigny, one of the favorite models of the painter.

For nearly a century ago, experts knew that Degas had painted the famous portrait over another image in some entity 1876 and 1880. As time grew old paint a faint hint of what appeared to be another woman began to poke through the top layers of paint.

so the gallery worked with scientists at the Australian Synchotron, who spent 33 hours scanning accurately paint a beam of X-ray high-definition produced by an accelerator particles called synchrotron. Synchrotrons accelerate electrons at high speed, creating a source of light a million times brighter than the sun.

the technique was so successful that scientists could not only see the details of the entire hidden image but also its evolution. For example, Degas seemed to have painted the ears of women are shaped like an elf, but later modified to give them a more conventional way.

The quality of the results emptied scientists. “We expected the image of a woman, but in no case with the detail we got to the end,” said Daryl Howard, scientist at the Australian Synchotron and one of the authors of the report.
