The American director Michael Cimino died today at age 77. His career was one of the strangest in the history of Hollywood. In 1978, his film Sniper (The Deer Hunter) was a resounding success. This bitter and great movie showing the aftermath of the Vietnam War in three survivors, earned five Oscars, including best picture and best director.
It was the second film Cimino. The relative success of A bounty of $ 500,000 ( 1974), which was also the author of the script, allowed the director to work without pressure and gather for Sniper A star cast, including Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, John Cazale and Meryl Streep, who was at that time the first Oscar nomination of her career.
But the rise of Cimino was as meteoric as abrupt fall. Following the success of Sniper , the producer United Artists gave him carte blanche for the next film, Heaven’s Gate (1980), whose shooting cuantiosamente exceeded the stipulated budget and it was a great failure of public and criticism, which almost led to bankruptcy producer.
