Michael died Cimino, director of the unforgettable film “The Sniper” – Clarín.com

The American director Michael Cimino died today at age 77. His career was one of the strangest in the history of Hollywood. In 1978, his film Sniper (The Deer Hunter) was a resounding success. This bitter and great movie showing the aftermath of the Vietnam War in three survivors, earned five Oscars, including best picture and best director.

It was the second film Cimino. The relative success of A bounty of $ 500,000 ( 1974), which was also the author of the script, allowed the director to work without pressure and gather for Sniper A star cast, including Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, John Cazale and Meryl Streep, who was at that time the first Oscar nomination of her career.

But the rise of Cimino was as meteoric as abrupt fall. Following the success of Sniper , the producer United Artists gave him carte blanche for the next film, Heaven’s Gate (1980), whose shooting cuantiosamente exceeded the stipulated budget and it was a great failure of public and criticism, which almost led to bankruptcy producer. Set in the United States in the second half of the nineteenth century, the film tells the story of two friends, children of the ruling elite trained at Harvard, who end up facing in the midst of a struggle between peasants and landowners. The film won the award for worst director in the ironic Razzie Awards 1981, although recently, when he spent restored to its original length of 216 minutes version, received praise in Venice and Locarno.

Michael Cimino filmed a total of eight films, although none touched the success of sniper . In 1985 he filmed Year of the Dragon , adapted by himself and Oliver Stone’s novel of Robert Daley. The Chinese community accused her of racism. Perhaps as a curse of the Dragon, Cimino eventually undergo some cosmetic surgeries that became strangely unrecognizable and oriental appearance.
