(CNN) – Queen Elizabeth II could be out of work. At least in Jamaica.
In a speech to legislators, the Governor General Patrick Allen proposed a constitutional amendment “to replace his majesty the queen with a non-executive chairman as head of state” in the nation Caribbean
.
While Elizabeth II is not very involved in the daily operation of the government of Jamaica, she is officially the head State in 15 nations in what is known as the Commonwealth, including Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
like Jamaica, all have longstanding ties with the United Kingdom and the British monarchy, even if are independent otherwise
This is an irony if the plan is carried out. Allen was appointed by queen Elizabeth II, like other governors-general Jamaicans. In fact, the official website of the King’s Chamber notes that its title is “the representative of Her Majesty in Jamaica” and suggested that Allen is actually trying to get out of the position.
This is not the only proposal set out in Allen’s speech to lawmakers, which comes weeks after a narrow victory in elections for the Workers Party of Jamaica, which was once the opposition. He also spoke of a number of other legislative priorities in the call throne speech, which was posted on a government website.
These cover topics such as health care, housing, education and The tourism. There was also a focus on justice, whom Allen referred as “integrated to improve the general welfare and to create a prosperous society.”
An element of this relates to the Drug Law dangerous. In his speech, Allen called for an amendment “to give legalization to that marijuana is used for specific purposes.”
Of course, this legislation has been adjusted to allow “the use of marijuana by people of the Rastafarian faith and to be used for medical, therapeutic and scientific purposes “. It also states that the possession of 2 or less ounces of marijuana is no longer a criminal offense.
In his speech Thursday, Allen did not specify how you want to change portions of the law related to marijuana, a drug which has long been linked with Jamaica.
