(Reuters) – Rock star Bruce Springsteen on Friday canceled a concert that would offer the weekend in North Carolina to protest a new state law that restricts rights of transgender people, as the choice to use a bathroom for men or women in line with their gender identity.
The action comes at a time when several states are discussing pass laws considered by some as discriminatory for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT).
Springsteen, whose words and actions have earned a reputation for a moderate political activism, said the cancellation was the best way he found to show their opposition.
“Some things are more important than a rock concert and the fight against prejudice and intolerance – that are happening as I write this – is one of them,” he said in a statement on the website.
The followers will receive the money back that was scheduled for Sunday in Greensboro, North Carolina, said the statement.
The southern states of the US have been the epicenter of a reaction against the judgment of the Supreme Court to legalize marriages between same sex.
This year, more than a dozen states have debated legislation that would restrict access to transgender people, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
A law related to the matter in Mississippi this week allows those with religious objections to deny marriage to same-sex services and allows religious reasons in the workplace impose criteria dress or dressing rooms.
