Spain protects the legacy of Lorca – The Time

Authorities in Spain have taken the first step to protect the legacy of the poet and playwright Federico García Lorca in order to avoid hypothetical sale and leaving the country.

the government of the region of Madrid, at the request of the Ministry of Culture, today began proceedings to declare of Cultural Interest (BIC) the nearly 19 thousand documents that make up the legacy of Spanish writer, author of “blood Wedding”.

with this move, is to prevent the legacy of Lorca can fragment and sold. “We no longer talk of separate parts, but a unit of the file, which will have to be respected,” the Secretary of State for Culture, José María Lasalle said today.

The documents are from 20 years ago Students at the residence of the Spanish capital. Among them are original drawings, manuscripts, letters, photographs and scores of the poet. Also his personal library, nourished by literary magazines, more than 4 000 500 books and works of art, among other objects.

The birthplace of Lorca, Granada, seeks to guard these funds in a center dedicated to the poet and opened there last July. But the problems surrounding the foundation that manages, for alleged debts, keep the moment in Madrid.

These debts were afraid that the foundation, chaired by the poet’s niece Laura Garcia Lorca, could sell part of the legacy to settle them.
