Five Days / was the initiator of a mixed paint linking Western modernism with African or Caribbean symbols. Wifredo Lam (Sagua La Grande (Cuba) 1902- Paris, 1982) addressed all the vanguards of the moment and endorsed the world’s problems, so commitment is something that permeates all his work.
Obsessed by painting the drama of his country, the cause and the spirit of blacks, Lam became aware at a young age of the racial question and its social and political in Cuba, in Europe and the United States implications. From painting to drawing, engraving to ceramics, the exhibition, which is displayed in the Sabatini building of the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid until 15 August, shows the criteria and own, unique and original language of this artist in his defense the dignity of life and freedom.
this is a journey, already shown at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, on the work of this author, created between Spain, Paris, Marseille and Cuba. The exhibition traces his singular path through 250 works (paintings, drawings, prints and ceramics), letters, photographs, magazines and books, with special emphasis on his years in Spain, in the engravings of the sixties and seventies and their collaborations with writers of his time, as well as works created on his return to his native Cuba (1940-1950).
the next stop sign will be in September at the Tate Modern in London.
