Barenboim concert plans in Iran despite Israeli opposition – El Universal

Berliner Staatsoper today confirmed plans for its music director, the Argentine-Israeli Daniel Barenboim a concert in front of the Staatskapelle Tehran .

According to the Berlin State Opera, the orchestra is currently in talks with Iran about a possible concert, that would be sponsored by the German Foreign Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The institution added that as soon as the conclusion of the talks is willing to provide more specific information.

The Israeli Minister of Culture, Miri Regev, announced yesterday that it will send a letter of protest to the Government German by the possible concert Barenboim, musical director of the Berlin Staatsoper in Tehran.

Barenboim “pursues an anti-Israel line and discredit Israel whenever he can,” in addition to abuse to impose their culture political ideas, reported on his Facebook account.

The Ministry of Culture of Iran had reported earlier this week that it is negotiating with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna about possible concerts in Tehran, information was denied by both orchestras.

Barenboim has been shown again and again critical of Israel’s settlement policy and the position of the different governments towards the Palestinians.

As a contribution to the reconciliation in the Middle East, Barenboim boosted in 1999 by the late Palestinian intellectual Edward Said the West-Eastern-Divan Orchestra , a project that brings together young Israeli and Palestinian musicians.

Last June, the pianist and conductor presented the first phase of the works from his academy to Israeli and Arab musicians, an institution which is located next to the headquarters of the Staatsoper Berlin and bearing the name Barenboim-Said.

Moreover, in 2011, the Argentine-Israeli musician traveled with musicians from various European orchestras to Gaza to deliver a “peace concert”.
