London, 21/08/2015 (The People’s Daily Online) – British researchers have managed to solve the mystery of the famous smile of the Mona Lisa, designed by Italian Leonardo da Vinci, after studying another work the artist whose protagonist also smiles enigmatically.

According to the magazine ‘Discover Magazine’, a group of researchers from the universities of Sheffield Hallam and Sunderland (UK) group examined the painting ‘La Bella Principessa’ (‘The beautiful princess’), painted by Da Vinci before the ‘Mona Lisa’ to late fifteenth century. In this picture the teacher used a gimmick to attract the viewer.

According to scientists, Da Vinci did ‘unattainable’ women smile of his paintings after deftly mix the colors and exploiting this so the viewer’s peripheral vision. Thanks to this technique, called “sfumato ‘, the shape of the mouth of the subject seems to change depending on the angle and point of view.

So, if the paint is observed directly, the slope of the mouth to look down, while as the eye moves elsewhere mouth seems to take a turn upward, creating a smile that can only be seen indirectly, like the Mona Lisa.

Researchers note that many artists tried to imitate the trick created by Da Vinci, but none managed to repeat the success of ‘La Gioconda’
