
Egyptian actor Michel Demitri Chalhoub , known as Omar Sharif , died today at age 83 to Cairo , as confirmed by the chain news Al Arabiya , close relatives to the artist. Sharif, famous for his portrayal of Lawrence of Arabia (1962, directed by David Lean) had suffered for several years with Alzheimer’s disease.
The Egyptian archaeologist and former Minister of Antiquities Zahi Hawas, intimate friend of Sharif, told the state newspaper Al Ahram the actor suffered a total loss of appetite.
His refusal to take food led to his hospitalization, due to the deterioration of his health, which he had been aggravated by Alzheimer’s. It is expected that his funeral be held Sunday

Born in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria on April 10, 1932, and studied acting in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
There he met the Egyptian director Youssef Chahine, who gave him a role in Sera fil Wadi (1954) film that debuted in the film and the Cannes Film Festival 1955.

The sixties were his prime as an actor, with works such as The Fall of the Roman Empire ( 1964) by Anthony Mann.
He was married to Egyptian actress Faten Hamama (deceased in January) from whom he divorced in 1965 and with whom he had a son, Tarek.
Among his latest greatest hits include Monsieur Ibrahim and the Flowers of the Koran , a film that starred in 2003 .
