Ridley Scott directed film ‘El Chapo’ – FORTUNE

MEXICO CITY (CNNExpansión) – The British director Ridley Scott reached an agreement with Fox to make a movie based on the figure of Joaquín El Chapo Guzman, leader of the Sinaloa cartel who escaped from prison on July 11.

Fox and Scott reached a deal on Wednesday night after “intense interest by studios and producers,” he said The Hollywood Reporter , which specializes in entertainment publication, citing the information as given exclusively for them.

Scott will direct the film, whose script is based on the book The Cartel , written by American Don Winslow, a novel that takes as its starting point the Sinaloa cartel and which speaks of Guzman Loera.

The book mentions the first escape from prison in 2001 and Guzman Loera “has received good reviews that mention it as a version of The Godfather but south of the border” says The Hollywood Reporter.

Fox has also obtained the rights to carry the big screen the novel The Power of the Dog , and also of Winslow which chronicles the early years of the movement of drugs in Latin America.

The escape of El Chapo the federal maximum security prison in the Altiplano, in the State of Mexico, made headlines worldwide and occurred a month after the publication of The Cartel, what the US considers publication will give impetus to the book and the film.
