China returns the passport to Ai Weiwei after 4 years – El Diario de Yucatan

         


     

BEIJING (AP) -. The Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, critical of the Beijing government, recovered his passport confiscated four years ago by the authorities

Ai published Wednesday in the social network Instagram a photo of himself holding a Chinese passport with the text “Today I received my passport.”

The artist was arrested by the authorities for about three months in 2011 but was released without charge.

Later, his design company was ordered to pay $ 2.4 million in taxes, a decision unsuccessfully appealed to Chinese courts.

The representative confirmed that Ai had identification but not elaborate.

The work of Ai have been exposed worldwide, making it one of the most internationally known Chinese dissidents.

The Chinese authorities often deny passport . dissidents that might embarrass the ruling Communist Party abroad
