NEW YORK. The new novel by American Harper Lee, “Go Set Watchman” (“Go and put a sentinel”), in its first week sold 1.1 million copies in the United States and Canada, today announced the HarperCollins.

The book, breaking 55 years of silence by publishing the author of Kill a Mockingbird , was released last day 14 and HarperCollins has already decided to extend the issue to 3.3 million units, it said in a statement.

“Sales for the first week (…) have far exceeded our expectations,” he said President and CEO of publisher, Brian Murray .

In addition, HarperCollins has published over 150,000 copies of the Spanish version of the book, for distribution in Latin America and Spain .

The novel, a sequel to Kill a Mockingbird , was written in the mid-50s, that is, before the classic starring Atticus Finch, but remained unpublished for decades.

The manuscript was discovered last fall and author, 89, gave the green light for publication, which has been met with mixed reactions, especially due to Finch as a man of dubious ethics After decades as a moral model for millions of Americans.
