The full message below:
“With tremendous sadness that I learned of the death of Christopher Lee. He was 93 years, he did not have his usual good health for a while, but his spirit remained, as always, indomitable.
Christopher spoke seven languages. It was, in every sense, a man of the world. Well versed in the arts, politics, literature, history and science. He was a scholar, a singer, an extraordinary storyteller and, of course, a wonderful actor.
One of my favorite pastimes when visiting London was going to see Christopher and Gitte (his wife), who regaled me with stories about his hours wonderful life. I loved to listen to them and he loved to tell stories that were more exciting because they were true, about his time in the Air Force in World War II, the years of terror in Hammer, and then working with Tim Burton, which I was very proud.
I was very fortunate to be working with Chris in five films and I never stopped feeling emotion to see him on set. I remember him telling me when I turned 40 (he was 80), ‘You are half the man that I am’. Be half the man that Christopher Lee is more than I could expect. He was a true gentleman, in an era in which people do not appreciate chivalry.
I grew up loving movies Christopher Lee. For most of my life, I was captivated by the iconic roles he not only created, but continued to possess decades later. Somewhere along the way, Christopher Lee, suddenly and magically, dissolved and became my friend, Chris. And I love that Chris even more.
There will never be another like Christopher Lee. He has a unique place in film history and in the hearts of millions of fans around the world. The world will be a poorer place without him. My deepest condolences to Gitte, her family and friends.
Rest in peace, Chris. A cinema icon has become legend. ”
