Director arrested for allegedly embezzling Alhambra – El Diario de Yucatan

         


     

GRANADA, Spain. (EFE) .- The director of the historic Moorish palace of the Alhambra, María del Mar Villafranca, was arrested today along with three other officials of the public body for alleged embezzlement of public funds.

The Alhambra a walled Arab city whose roots are in the thirteenth century, a World Heritage Site since 1984 and one of the most famous of Spain historical and artistic buildings.

All were cited yesterday that they should come today to testify police station in Granada (south) and then were released with charges for alleged misappropriation of public funds amounting to 5.5 million euros.

Police sources told Efe that there is an open investigation into the Alhambra related economic issues.

The prosecution recently opened criminal investigations following a complaint about alleged irregularities in the award of the rental service of audio guides Alhambra.

The research aimed a possible influence peddling in the competition of audio guides, despite the alleged irregularities related to the amendment of the terms of the fixed and variable annual fee billing service.

The Alhambra recorded in 2014 more visitors in its history with more than 2.4 million tourists
