The celebration of the fourth centenary of the second part of the Don Quixote had a new chapter yesterday. At the headquarters of the Royal Spanish Academy he was presented a new and “monumental” two-volume edition of Cervantes’ novel, extensively revised and renewed, with the participation of over one hundred specialists and writers. Published by Espasa and now Ballantine Books, this edition adds to the Don Quixote by popular novelist Arturo Perez-Reverte which was launched in 2014. As noted the secretary of the Academy, Santiago Muñoz Machado, the first volume, 1644-page text contains Cervantes, set “with the most rigorous techniques” of modern philology, and also adds a number of introductions. The second companion volume, 1668 pages, is a book in itself and could have somehow an independent reading. Texts by specialists and writers who comment one by one the chapters of the novel are gathered there; some of these “commentators” are Javier Cercas, Roger Chartier, Alberto Manguel, Javier Marias, Claudio Guillen and Martin de Riquer.
