The Madrid Book Fair increased its sales by 6.1% – Ultimahora.com

“We are happy and with a sense of satisfaction to see that the show continues to recover and sales are growing, but the other part is the need for the public to come back tomorrow to bookstores, which is what has been lost,” he told Efe the director of the Fair, Teodoro Sacristan.

The book fair in the Spanish capital functions as an island for the sector, as with specific dates such as Christmas, according to Sexton.

74th Fair, which opened on 29 May this year featured 368 booths and 472 exhibitors.

An issue in which poetry has had a special role, as could be seen in the theme of the show: “Love is what we tend (bridges, words)”. It is a verse of Jose Angel Valente, the Spanish poet who was honored at the show at 15 years after his death, which will be commemorated next July.

Also in this issue paid tribute to the poet Damaso Alonso, Teresa of Avila, Carmen Martin Gaite or Ana Maria Matute. And was particularly important the presence of Central European literature with the participation of poets, storytellers and essayists like Adam Zagajewski, Andrzej Sapkowski and Olga Tokarczunk

Sexton asked the Government to “reactivate institutional purchases. Let’s see if the new municipalities that have opened yesterday taken up the matter and make reprogramming of those budgets “

When presented this 74th edition of the fair which ends today, the president of the Guild of Editors of Madrid, Pilar Gallego , he said the literary event started with encouraging figures after years of decline, which at the end of these nearly three weeks of Fair has been confirmed.
