The poet and translator Montserrat Abelló, which in 2008 received the Honor Award of Catalan Letters granting Omnium Cultural, died today in Barcelona at 96 years of age, as confirmed by the Institution of Catalan Letters.

Born in Tarragona the February 1, 1918, Abelló spent his childhood and youth between various locations as Tarragona, Cadiz, London and Cartagena, following the transfer of his father for work.

He studied Philosophy at Barcelona and in 1939 went into exile in France, first, and later to Chile, where he lived about twenty years, until he returned to Barcelona in 1960.

Abelló translated important works of Anglo-Saxon writers like Iris Murdoch, Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Margaret Atwood, Adrienne Rich and Alice Walker.

The last poems of Abelló are ‘enllà month parlar concis’ (Denes, 2014) ; ‘Poemes d’amor. Anthology ‘(Denes, 2010),’ The intimate neighb silenci fred ‘(Denes, 2009), Memòria me your i’ (Edicions War, 2006) among others.

The Minister of Culture Ferran Mascarell, stressed, told Catalunya Radio, “poetic depth” of Montserrat Abelló “from its simplicity” and said that “everyone who read it, liked her.”
