Mada, the last word of Matute – The Reason

At the height of the word ‘Mada’, the Brother of Ana Maria Matute-never took the computer and as he reached was to retire the old Olivetti stopped short. There was no time for more. Or maybe everything had been said. “Mada” only “Mada”. Every good reader is an undercover spy, and every writer, a map of innuendo. Did You Matute say more, much more, with that one word, with 170 pages of the unfinished ‘Family Demons, “his posthumous novel, published by Destiny? In the view of those who tried to close, “Mada” is not a random word and not the only nod to the writer to his work and his life, his themes and obsessions. With ‘Family Demons “Matute wanted” close the loop “button your bibliography, and so left suggested.

” Mada “is the nickname of the Magdalena in tata’ family Demons” and her figure, the maid and accomplice, is one of the most deeply rooted in the literature of the author and a nod to his own childhood. Even subtler, more symbolic -Matute like to suggest instead of showing ‘less is more’ – is a self-reference to his literary beginnings. In 1947, he published in the weekly ‘Destination’ his first story, “The guy next door.” He was 20 years old. “I was ilusionadísima; was the kiosk and bought all the copies he could, “recalled Maria Paz yesterday Ortuño, friend and collaborator at the book launch at the Instituto Cervantes. More than 65 years later, Matute defines Berni, one of the protagonists of this novel, as “the boy next door.” Life and work, and destination memory, encased in an unfinished work but not lame. Death took her on June 25. And despite his perseverance with unbearable dizziness wrote and corrected with little quejarse-, this’ frantic fabulating “(as he defined Almudena Grandes) had no time to pack this” gift “for their unconditional posthumous.

“Family Demons’ starts in 1936, but is not” another damn novel about the Civil War “(the term we stole Isaac Rosa). Everything is parsimonious and symbolic, as the accomplice and confessional voice of Eva, the protagonist. Perhaps even the name is casual, adventure Ortuño; Eva may be all women or at least all women Matute, these teenagers locked in a festering wound in the vaguest age, is the darkest? Eva, novice, has to leave the convent when the war; back home, reunited Colonel, his father, confined to a wheelchair, cantankerous and overbearing, Magdalena tata, Yago dark … and love, forbidden love. Pere Gimferrer remembers Victor Erice in the prologue: “Family Demons” akin to “The Spirit of the Beehive ‘and’ South ‘, intimate film, unfinished but round

In the war he was. Hooch mortally afraid of fireworks as Gil de Viedma an “impossible propensity to myth.” But this novel goes beyond recreating environments. It is as if the author, with his latest work, connecting with his generation wanted, with those extraordinary postwar women (Carmen Laforet, Rodoreda …) that became the literary world looks with apprehension by censorship. In a way, Matute contextualizes itself and, after passing through the glittering fantasy novel (“Forgotten King Gudu ‘,’ Aranmanoth”) returns to “little old world” of “The dead children” (1958) or “First Memory “(1959). In short, come home: bookstores
