(CNN) – It seems that Top Gear has a new friend.
The BBC confirmed that Matt LeBlanc, American actor and star of the series Friends will join Chris Evans, radio personality and British television, as a driver for the new version program, which will air in May.
The actor of 48 years is the first non-British driver who joined the popular program on cars in its 39-year history.
Top Gear is one of the world’s most valuable products of British television, it was estimated that generated 150 million pounds (4.064 million pesos) in revenue for the commercial division BBC in 2014, according to media reports.
“As passionate about cars and big fan of Top Gear , I am honored and excited to be part of this new phase of the iconic program. What a thrill!” He said Matt LeBlanc in a press release.
LeBlanc will join “immediately” to the production, according to the BBC.
“Matt has always been fond of cars and love to join Top Gear ,” Evans said. “The demonstration of our wildest notions about cars is a dream job and I know that both discuss some ideas on epic road trips. We are eager to share in a few months on the screen what we have done.”
The unexpected appointment totally surprised fans despite winning actor had hinted on Twitter in recent days. LeBlanc, who appeared twice in the program and holds the record for best lap time of a celebrity, published a GIF file in which he declares his love for Top Gear and gave clues to alert their followers that “in a day or two there will be great news.”
Alan Tyler, acting director of performing entertainment products, said LeBlanc is “the best” and “a brilliant procurement.”
He added that “it is an avowed fan of cars and passionate about the program. We really look forward to seeing Chris and Matt presenting the completely new program to our audience.”
Evans shared on Twitter the first promotional picture of them with The Stig to warn fans that “there is more to come.”
Top Gear used to have as a driver Jeremy Clarkson, but after the latter hit a producer last year, the BBC decided not to renew his contract.
A complaint against the principal conductor is not raised, but the furor sparked the incident was enough to throw him.
Meanwhile, Clarkson and his former colleagues of Top Gear , Richard Hammond and James May, allied with Amazon Prime to drive a new car program service streaming .
