The colorful and monumental series “Sombras” (Shadows 1978-1979), Andy Warhol silkscreen composed of 102 large format reflecting the incursion of New York artist in the field of abstraction panels are on display today in the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (northern Spain).

the project, owned by the Dia Art Foundation, which has loaned for the occasion, is exposed for the second time in Europe and has never before been exhibited complete in this continent since its extension makes it very difficult to present it as a whole, something that the United States was not made until 2012 on the occasion of a show held at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington.

Given its size, for full display 134.8 linear meters of wall are required, so the first time exhibited in a gallery of New York’s SoHo neighborhood in January 1979 could only display 83 panels and, of these, only 67 the public.

the rest was in the private part of the gallery, recalled the curator of the exhibition, Lucia Agirre, in the presentation today to the media of the exhibition, which opens to the public tomorrow for just over two months, until October 2.

the large rooms designed by architect Frank Gehry for the Guggenheim Bilbao have allowed this center can see the entire work without any wall or visual barrier do lose perspective of the whole the viewer, said the curator of the exhibition.

Agirre said that if to contemplate a whole may seem repetitive and monotonous work, when examined in detail each canvas you can see that each piece is different from the previous given the technique used by the artist for making them.

This was to first print a monochrome based on the canvas and then, with a mop of those used in cleaning of soils, loaded with acrylic paint, make color application in which it is every shadow, black for priming the shadow that simulates the “negative” of a photograph, and a different color, for which acts as “positive” of the work.

Only two of the 102 paintings, Warhol replaced the black by gray for shadow “negative” of his compositions.

in the “positive” and “negative” compositions of the shadows that give name to the work dominate two figures, one tall and narrow called “peak” (peak), and a shorter, stocky dubbed “cap” (hat or lid).

Agirre said that, 37 years after it was made, is still unknown what was the object used by Warhol to project the shadow then reproduced on each canvas and remains the subject of discussion among specialists in the work of New York artist.

the Commissioner recalled that Warhol himself once said that these figures were projected by an object that was in his famous studio, “the Factory” (the Factory) shadow.

Agirre acknowledged that the series received at its premiere in 1979, good and bad reviews and, among these, which they considered “insipid”, “pretentious” and an installation “exaggerated” included (given its size ), which was “among the worst” that made Warhol in his career.

the paintings include a total of 17 monochromatic colors ranging from lime green, bright pink and blue midnight until eggplant the chartreuse, carmine red, yellow and silver.

the curator of the exhibition said that the exhibition will “surprise” the public that contemplate because it is one of the works less disclosed the New York artist, best known for his colorful works of objects and icons of American popular culture.

This series is part of the six more abstract aesthetic that produced Andy Warhol to reach the half century of life, It begins with the titled “Corrosion” or “oxidation” and ends with “Yarns” (Threads).

the work is presented in the same layout and order used by the wizards of artist Ronnie Cutrone and Stephen Mueller 1979 New York to present to the public and that is what has been used in subsequent exhibitions of the work, said Agirre.
