Three magic number of Mexicans in the Oscar – El Universal

Three is the magic number that catapulted Mexican filmmakers to Oscar history.

On Sunday night Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu added the third Prize consecutive Academy for a director born in Mexico and his compatriot photographer Emmanuel Lubezki, won his third medal in a row, the first record of this kind in its category.

“I can not believe this is happening,” said Gonzalez Inarritu to accept his statuette in the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. “It’s amazing to receive this award tonight, but for me it is much more beautiful to share with the entire cast and crazy and talented team … I thank you from the heart”.

The category has been dominated by address American directors, but since 2014 things changed. Alfonso Cuarón won the statuette in 2014 for his film “Gravity”; Gonzalez Inarritu, or G. Iñárritu as it appears in the credits of his latest film, won the Oscar for “Birdman” and repeated in 2016 with “The Revenant” ( “The Reborn”) with what remains the record in history three consecutive years of triumphs for foreign filmmakers.

Lubezki (1964) has been nominated eight times for an Oscar in 1995 with “A Little princess” Cuaron. Iñárritu (1963) has been nominated as a director on three occasions, first by “Babel” As a country 2006. Mexico has been nominated eight times in the category of Foreign Language Film (one for “Amores Perros” Iñárritu ), but has not won the prize.

“Leo, you’re ‘the reborn’, thank you for giving your heart, your soul, your talent,” he said Inarritu the star of the film, Leonardo DiCaprio, who moments before had won the award for best actor. “I’m very lucky to be here tonight. A lot of people do not have that luck,” he said and took the opportunity to speak out against racism in a year in which the Academy has been criticized for the lack of diversity among the nominees actors.

“that color of the skin to become as irrelevant as the long hair,” he said.

the message from the director comes at a time when Mexicans and immigrants have been targeted Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has even proposed building a wall that separates the United States from Mexico.

the memes that joined Trump and Iñárritu soon arrived , one had the Republican announcing it would build a barrier around the Mexican for other directors have an opportunity next year, referring to the border fence that the candidate intends to finish building to prevent the entry of unauthorized migrants.

Lubezki, who achieved his victory after being awarded by “Birdman” and “Gravity”, dedicated the honor to his wife and parents and colleagues extolled his nominees. Thanked especially Inarritu, whom he referred to as his “compadre”.

“I think I’m photographer luckiest in the world to be working with these directors,” said moments after the room press.

DiCaprio was cheered to the stage to accept his first Oscar after five nominations. He received the award for his portrayal of explorer Hugh Glass, who was attacked by a bear and abandoned by his companions to believe dead.

“To Mr. Alejandro Inarritu, to develop film history have open roads in these recent years. Thanks to you and Chivo to create a transcendent cinematic experience for everyone, “said the actor.

” the Revenant “, which topped the list of nominees with 12 nominations and came sweeping the season awards, at the end only got three, while “Spotlight” took the statuette for best film.

Among the population, the celebration of “the Revenant” is extended especially to DiCaprio, who has thousands of followers from his days of “Titanic,” which was partially filmed in Baja California, Mexico.

in Twitter, the actor was a tendency in the country after his triumph. On Facebook, a group of fans created a page titled “If Leonardo DiCaprio wins Oscar We’re going to the Angel!”. The page had 18,000 concerned.

After the ceremony, which ended around 11:00 pm on Sunday, began to gather at the monument dozens of people, mostly young, while shouting the official truncheon proposal on the Facebook page: “Leo, brother, you are now Mexican!”. They also met the proposal to bring teddy bears, referring to Bear film brutally attacks the character DiCaprio.

Other honked their car to go through the traffic circle surrounding the monument.

“for me I think it’s equally important one than the other,” said Victor Benitez, 25, on Oscar Inarritu and DiCaprio. “I think it’s very difficult to take a movie of almost two hours without much dialogue, without more important than the expression itself acting. I think he’s father that and I think he deserved it.”

Indira Alvarez, 23, arrived at Angel complete with crutches on a night that was supposed to be studying for an exam.

“I’ve never really been a fan,” said DiCaprio. “But now I love him with all my being … I felt great. I would never put me between a dead horse to cover me from the cold”.

Near midnight the group was celebrating Mexico.

“congratulations Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, for another Oscar for best director. you’re a credit to your country,” wrote Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, who also extended congratulations to the director of cinematography. “Congratulations Emmanuel Lubezki for a third consecutive Oscar. I welcome this new recognition of your great talent.”

The case of Lubezki is surprising since has been imposed in the category individually. Although there are photographers with four Oscars, marking three years in a row had not happened before.

This time the Academy Awards is similar to the boom had in the 1940s, director John Ford and photographer Leon Shamroy, both Americans.

Ford won the Oscar four times, including two consecutive in 1940 and 41. Shamroy was nominated 16 times and won the Oscar four times, including two consecutive, 1944 and 45. More than seventy years later, the difference is that the filmmakers that have marked the second half of the 2010s began their careers in Mexico and Mexican identity remains.
