“Shadows” Warhol visit the Guggenheim Bilbao – El Universal

The colorful and monumental series Shadow ( Shadows 1978-79) of Andy Warhol , composed of 102 screen printed large format panels that reflect the incursion of the New York artist in the field of abstraction, they are exhibited today in the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (northern Spain).

works owned by the Dia Art Foundation, which has given for the occasion, is exposed for the second time in Europe and never before exhibited complete on this continent since its size makes it difficult to present it as a whole, rather than in the United States was not made until 2012 on the occasion of a show held at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington.

Because of its size, for full display 134.8 linear meters of wall are required, so the first time exhibited in a gallery of the New York district of Soho in January 1979 could only display 83 panels and, of these, only 67 to the public.

the rest was in the private part of the gallery, he recalled the curator sample, Lucía Agirre, presenting today to the media in the exhibition that opens tomorrow to the public during more than two months until October 2.

the large rooms dimensions designed by architect Frank Gehry for the Guggenheim Bilbao have allowed this center can see the entire work, with no wall or obstacle that makes losing visual perspective of the viewer assembly, said the curator of the exhibition.

Agirre said that if to contemplate a whole may seem repetitive and monotonous work, when examined in detail each canvas you can see that each piece is different from the previous given the technique used by the artist for its preparation .

This was to first print a monochrome based on the canvas and then, with a mop of those used in cleaning floors, full of acrylic paint, make color application in which it is every shadow, black for priming the shadow that seems to be the “negative” of a photograph, and a different color, for which acts as a “positive” of the work.

Only two of the 102 paintings, Warhol replaced the black by gray shadow for “negative” of his compositions.

in the “positive” and “negative” compositions of the shadows that give name to the work dominate two figures, one tall and narrow so-called “peak” (peak), and a shorter, stocky dubbed “cap” (hat or cap).

Agirre noted that 37 years after being made remains unknown which was the object used by Warhol to project the shadow then reproduced on each canvas and remains a matter of debate among experts in the work of New York artist.

the Commissioner recalled that self Warhol once said that these figures were cast by an object that was in his famous study, “the Factory” (the Factory) shadow.

Agirre acknowledged that the series received at its premiere in 1979 and good bad reviews and, among these, included those who considered “insipid”, “pretentious” and “exaggerated” installation (given its size), which was “among the worst” Warhol did in his career.

the paintings include a total of 17 monochrome colors ranging from lime green, bright pink and midnight blue to aubergine, chartreuse, carmine red, yellow and silver.

the curator of the exhibition said that the exhibition will “surprise” the public that the contemplated because it is one of the least disclosed works in the New York artist, best known for his colorful works of objects and icons of American popular culture.

the series is part of the six more abstract aesthetic that produced Andy Warhol to reach the half-century, beginning with the one titled “Corrosion” or “oxidation” and ends with “Yarns” (Threads) .

the work is presented in the same arrangement and order used attendees artist Ronnie Cutrone and Stephen Mueller in 1979 for submission to the New York public and that is what has been used in subsequent exhibitions the work, said Agirre.
