Madrid , 2 Oct.-Colombian writer Juan Gabriel Vásquez today won the Prize Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) 2014 for his novel “Reputations”, in which the author demonstrates “the complex relationship between power and the media”, as stated in the jury.

Chaired by the Director of the RAE, José Manuel Blecua, the jury also distinguished this novel for its “ability to develop a novel finished building,” reports the Academy.

The candidacy of “The reputations, “published by Abundant was proposed by academics Javier Marias , Victor Garcia de la Concha and Luis Mateo Díez.

The jury for this prize, worth 25,000 euros and a commemorative medal, has been well trained by José Manuel Sánchez Ron academics, Salvador Gutiérrez Ordóñez, Juan Gil Fernández and Carme Riera .

At this eleventh edition of the Royal Spanish Academy Award there have been twelve nominations of American and Spanish works. Each had to be supported by a minimum of three academic SAR, or any of their respective Academies.

Six of those nominations came from Spain and six American corporations , specifically Nicaragua Mexico , Salvador, Uruguay and Puerto Rico.

“Reputations” meant in 2013 the return of Juan Gabriel Vásquez (Bogotá, 1973) to the novel, after the success of his previous work, “The sound of things falling,” which won Awards as important as Abundant, the Inglés Pen Award, Gregor von Rezzori and, last June, the IMPAC, which for the first time in nineteen years of history went to a Latin American author.

The work honored today by the RAE , a short novel about the power of opinion makers and the importance given to the image in today’s society, was a 180 degree turn in the path of this writer that, as she told Efe when it was published, always tries to do something different and try to “be true to what Gide said not to take advantage of the momentum gained.”

But it is no different in this moral novel. In its 140 pages nest some major obsessions Vasquez, as the theme of memory and the relationship with the past.

“I sometimes say, half-jokingly, that interest me more than the dead live and it’s because I have that awareness about family past, but also the collective past of our country, “said Vasquez, considered one of the highlights of his generation American writers.

The novel is starring Javier Mallarino, the country’s most influential political cartoonist and a man can topple with his cartoons political and “cause the revocation of a law.”

The main focus of the book is “the exploration of the importance we give in today’s world in our image, our reputation, and how fragile they are. And the power they have over our reputation reviewers in the press, “said Vasquez.

” Reputations “is “a moral novel” because it explores the consequences of the decisions made and researches “how we deal with our mistakes and that we have the uncanny ability to harm humans,” said the author.
