Star Wars better than a gold mine for Disney – Financial Journal

Walt Disney Co. gave “something better than a gold mine” to buy the franchise of “Star Wars” and now wants to expand its projects to build attractions on the series in its theme parks, the chief executive said yesterday study Bob Iger.

Three years after acquiring Lucasfilm Ltd, Disney released this week in theaters the first installment of the saga of “The Wars”, which is considered the theatrical release of the year. The film grossed US $ 14.1 million from ticket sales on its opening day in some international markets.

Experts project that the new installment raise between $ 180 million and US $ 223 million in United States and Canada, between Thursday and Sunday, following the extraordinary reception given among critics and fans, who waited for the installment of the series that began in 1977.

“Frankly I think we found more than gold here, is just great, “Iger told Reuters during the premiere of the film in London.

” The awakening of the Force “is the first film in the saga of” Star Wars “in 10 years. Reviews were embargoed until Wednesday but when they were finally published many critics praised the film and the first fans who saw it gave its approval.

“I feel relieved, yes, but I feel really validated” Iger said. “I think the people who made this movie are getting the accolades that correspond both by critics and audiences,” he added.

“The awakening of the Force” picks up the story seen in the ” Return of the Jedi, “released in 1983, and Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill return to their roles as Han Solo, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker, respectively. Is the first of a new trilogy and independent films that the studio plans to produce.

“The gigantic sound you hear is a collective sigh of relief, of generations of fans of ‘Star Wars’, from children even their grandparents, who can rest assured that the Force is still with the franchise that grew and grew old, “wrote Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post.

In August, Disney said it wanted to build areas “Star Wars” in its parks in California and Florida, with new attractions.

A success that unites generations

Dressed in uniforms of imperial soldiers, Darth Vader masks, using layers and lightsabers, both young and not so much followers were turned en masse to the premiere of “The Awakening of the Force”, queuing for hours to see the movie.

Parisian moviegoers row began before dawn. “It is a phenomenon that goes beyond the film itself is remarkable (…) An event like this one not to be missed,” said Benoit Alix, wearing a mask of imperial soldier.

“As the best ‘Star Wars’ of anything-movies, television series, video game, Derivative at least 32, ‘Waking Force’ gives new energy and life to a sacred franchise so that renews old pleasures and points to promising new directions, “wrote critic Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter.

” The awakening of the Force “won first prize this week when the Cinematography Institute of America (AFI, for its acronym in English) included it among the 10 best films of the year.

“The awakening of the Force” was included on a list along with other favorites like comedy Wall Street Crimes “The Big Short” and the drama about the romance of two women “Carol”.

The main films of the year are selections by critics, academics, film and television artists and members Escrow Institute, and after the nominations were awarded this year for the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).

While “The awakening of the Force” received nominations for these two awards possibly due to the fact that voters had not seen the film, its AFI award makes it a potential candidate for the Oscars to be delivered in February.

The awards voters usually ignore action movies and special for stories more dramatic and realistic effects. But this year, the latest installment of “The Wars” was included along with other action films.

“I love that have managed to gather the entire cast of the original films because that gives us a sense of being true to the story and hope they can achieve that, “Louis, a Brazilian exchange student in the British capital said. (Reuters) B
