NEW YORK, Nov. 9, 2015.- A painting by Amedeo Modigliani was sold on Monday at 170.4 million dollars at auction in New York, a world record for the Italian artist.
The work “Nude lying” was auctioned by Christie’s auction after prolonged offers. It was the second highest price achieved at auction for a work of art.
Considered to be one of his best known works, the portrait painted in 1917-1918 almost caused a scandal when it was first exhibited in Paris . The previous record price for a work of Modigliani was 71 million.
The painting “Women of Algiers” (version O) by Pablo Picasso set the record for the highest amount paid for a work of art at auction. Christie’s sold in May at 179.4 million dollars.
The auction house expects to sell at least 1,000 million in art this week.
