Stolen masterpieces by Rubens and Tintoretto in Italy – Digital Journal Juarez

Rome – Fifteen paintings, including masterpieces by Rubens and Tintoretto, were stolen by masked gunmen from a museum in Verona (northern Italy), said Friday the mayor of the city.

The robbers, dressed in black, came Thursday afternoon in the museum of Castelvecchio, where they bound and gagged the guard and an employee before seize the paintings.

In his booty include painted by the Flemish baroque master Peter Paul Rubens school and one of the great painters of the Venetian school, Tintoretto, precursor of the baroque.

The list also portraits works are Pisanello, Bellini, Giovanni Francesco Caroto and Hans de Jode.

The museum estimates the total value of the works is about 15 million euros (16 million dollars) and considers that the operation was ordered by a collector private.

“Someone sent them, they knew exactly where they were going and they had to steal,” said Mayor Flavio Tosi.

The museum is monitored permanently and the theft was organized at the end of the day, when the building was empty, just before the alarms were activated, said Roberto Bolis, a spokesman for the mayor.

“We do not know whether they were armed, or if the weapon used the guardian, “he said.
